The ‘Game Of Thrones’ Season Finale Set A Bunch Of Piracy Records

The Game of Thrones season finale got huge ratings. Huge. Even though it was up against Game 2 of the NBA Finals, it still pulled in 5.4 million viewers in just the hour it was shown on television, making it the second most-watched live episode of the season. And according to HBO, when you factor in DVRs and On Demand and such, episodes from this season have been averaging over 13 million viewers each (good for second place in HBO history, behind the 2004 season of The Sopranos), so it’s safe to say that 5.4 million figure is just the tip of the iceberg.

But it’s not just standard ratings records the show is setting. Oh no. PEOPLE. BE. PIRATING.

The season finale of Game of Thrones has set a new BitTorrent record with more than 170,000 people sharing an episode simultaneously. In just one day more than a million people have downloaded a copy of the show, figures no other TV-show comes close to. [...]

In recent weeks the hit show has been shared millions of times online, but never before have we seen this many people sharing the same file.

Within a few hours after it was released hundreds of thousands grabbed a copy of the show via The Pirate Bay and other torrent sites, breaking the old record Game of Thrones set just a few weeks ago during the premiere of the third season.

So … uh, con … grat … u… lations? Is that what one says here? I’m not sure. Having The Most Pirated Show is a little like having The Most Robbed Clothing Store. On one hand, the type of COOL REBELLIOUS TEENZ who do the shoplifting are the same ones who can help make your product more popular by wearing it on stage when their band (The Cool Rebellious Teenz) plays a local punk rock show. But one the other hand, I imagine you’re also like “Yo, maybe just don’t steal from me so much. I know you have the money. Your mom pays your car insurance.” It’s a give and take, I suppose. Mostly a take, though. You know, because of all the stealing.
