Weekend Preview: The Return Of 'Dexter'

Dexter (Showtime, Sunday 9 p.m.) — SEASON PREMIERE. It’s been an up and down seven seasons of Showtime’s biggest drama, but there’s one thing that I can always say for Dexter: The season premieres have always been great. It’s the middle episodes that are the slog. Here are ten open questions we have about the series heading into the final season.

Ray Donovan (Showtime, Sunday 10 p.m.) — SERIES PREMIERE. The pilot episode of the new Showtime private detective drama has been available online for a few weeks now, and it’s a pretty solid pilot that introduces a lot of interesting narratives. But, man: The Boston accents are not good. Liev Schreiber is a great actor, but even the best struggle with that accent.

The Killing (AMC, Sunday 9 p.m.) — Thanks to a solid third season so far, The Killing has been upgraded from miserable viewing experience to a show that’s better than you might think.

Top Hooker (Animal Planet, Sunday 10 p.m.) — It’s not what you think, although I had to look it up to confirm that. It’s a reality show with episode titles like “The Oldest Profession,” “Wave Riders,” and “Who’s Got the Smallest?” but it always got a good review from Common Sense Media, the outfit that rates show based on how good they are for your kids. It is sadly just a fishing reality competition.

Venture Bros (Adult Swim, Sunday 11:59) — I didn’t forget to include it.

Anna Nicole (Lifetime, Saturday 8 p.m.) — I just want to remind you all that Danger has a wager on the biopic, as he wrote: “I’ve got $100 that says there’s a scene in this movie where Anna Nicole Smith has a breakdown in front of a mirror (mascara running, screaming, the whole nine yards) and then shatters it with a curling iron. Book it.” I wouldn’t bet against him.

Maron (IFC, Friday 10:30 p.m.) — SEASON FINALE. I just plain don’t understand the appeal of Marc Maron. He’s like a male cat lady, to me. Anyway, they’re marathoning the entire series on IFC starting at 5, leading to the finale, which will feature Adam Scott. Why does he get such fantastic guests?
