Weekend Preview: The Season Finale Of ‘Game of Thrones’

By 06.07.13

Game of Thrones (HBO, Sunday 9 p.m.) — How will they top last week’s episode? They won’t, that’s how. But that’s OK. I think we could use a break from the bloodletting. Like, a nine-month break. This week’s episode is called “Mhysa,” which is German for mother, and there are lots of mothers in this series, so it could be a reference to any one of them. What I do know, from previews, is that Joffrey and Tywin will have a showdown. People with old-school DVRs should also note that the finale runs 70 minutes, in case you need to make adjustments. Veep and Family Tree will both be pushed back ten minutes, as a result.

Mad Men (AMC, Sunday 10 p.m.) — Will Megan be dead? Will Betty die? Will Bob Benson be revealed to be a former colleague of Joan’s ex-husband sent to spy on her? Or will absolutely nothing of note happen in this week’s episode, sending the Internet into a tailspin of malaise. We really have destroyed Mad Men for poor Matthew Weiner. If the show matches up with one of the theories, then we’ll complain that he was too transparent. If nothing explosive happens, then we’ll accuse Weiner of being boring. I should also note that, for those Time Warner subscribers over on the West Coast, you may be losing your East Coast feeds, so check your listings to ensure you get Mad Men this weekend.

The Killing (AMC, Sunday 9 p.m.) — Maybe there will be another “Firefly” reference? I dunno. I got nothing. I’ll be watching, though, for the Sarsgaard and for Holden 2.0.

In the Flesh (BBC American, Friday and Saturday, 10 p.m.) — Parts two and three air tonight and tomorrow of the new BBC zombie series, which I reviewed earlier today. Short version: It’s not an action drama, but it is a brilliant use of zombies and a riveting series.

Continuum (SyFy, Friday 10 p.m.) — SEASON FINALE. I watched half a season of this, and it’s decent low-budget science fiction. But like Defiance, there just wasn’t enough to keep me coming back.

Falling Skies (TNT, Sunday 10 p.m.) — In case you care.

Venture Brothers (Adult Swim, Sunday 11:59 p.m.) — To keep VB fans from yelling at me for not adding it.
