Weekend Preview: Can Aaron Sorkin Out-Smug Occupy Wall Street?

Note: Check in all weekend for continuing television coverage from Comic-Con.

Dexter (Showtime, Sunday 9 p.m.) — Dexter season eight continues with an appearance from LaGuerta. Somehow. You know what would make this show really great? Six episode seasons. Maybe five.

Newsroom (HBO, Sunday 10 p.m.) — It’s only been one episode so far, but I’ve noticed that readers have not yelled at me nearly as much this season as last when it comes to loving Newsroom. I appreciate that. Tonight’s episode follows the Operation Genoa tip. They cut Patton Oswalt’s scene last week (which seemed to come a as a surprise to Oswalt), but maybe he’ll make an appearance this week. It does appear, however, that the Occupy Wall Street story will continue. As one commenter (Otto, I think) noted, it takes a LOT for Sorkin to out-smug the Occupy Wall Streeters, but hell if he doesn’t pull it off.

The Killing (AMC, Sunday 9 p.m.) — Many of us have talked up how improved this season has been, but if you haven’t waded back in yet, maybe hold off until you hear how the rest of the season plays out. Last week’s episode was a real wheel-spinner.

Comedy Bang! Bang! (IFC, Friday 10 p.m.) — On the podcast this week, Josh ranked last week’s premiere among his top five shows of the week, but suggested that it’s not an incredibly accessible show. I gave the podcast my first listen this week, and I’m going to agree with that assessment, insofar as the podcast goes at least (it may have been an off episode. Either that, or people really like 90 minutes of FM radio schtick and a celebrity impersonators riffing in character). On the other hand, I heard host Scott Aukerman on another podcast this week (How Did This Get Made?) and he was great, although that podcast is MAGIC.

Orange is the New Black (Netflix, Anytime) — We’ll likely write a post or two about the latest Netflix show next week, but I’ll just say this for now: It is phenomenal, and with three stellar original series now on Netflix, it’s certainly giving HBO and AMC a run for their money.

Celebrity Ghost Stories (BIO, Saturday 9 p.m.) — So, this is not only an actual show, but this is its fifth season finale. Somehow, I’ve never heard of it. It’s a documentary in which “celebrities” (Richard Greico, Craig Kilborn, Biz Markee, etc.) talk about their brushes with the paranormal. Sounds like a great Saturday night, or at least better than Animal Planet’s, Cat From Hell (also a real show, which has been on for four seasons).

The Metal Show (VH1 Classic, Saturday 10:30 p.m.) — Speak of the devil! I write about bad hair metal bands — including Kix — earlier this week, and lo and behold, Kix will be on The Metal Show.

Venture Bros. (Adult Swim, Sunday 11:59) — SEASON FINALE. Obligatory.
