Hey, let’s check in to see what the critics are saying about Dads now that it has a few episodes under its bel-… aaaaaaaaaaaaaaand it has a zero percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

I’m sure someone somewhere will see this and say that it’s an unfair representation because the goose egg comes from the noted members of the PC police in the television criticism community, but to that person, wherever they are, I would make two points: First of all, television critics regularly trip all over themselves to give praise and/or awards to Louis C.K. and South Park, which both make a habit of wading neck-deep in touchy subject matter. I mean, Jesus, just last night South Park discussed the George Zimmerman/Stand Your Ground controversy by having a racist elementary school student unapologetically shoot the town’s only black child, whose name, as a reminder, is Token. Critics are generally receptive to quote-unquote offensive material if it’s also smart and funny. Dads is neither. Dads is just terrible. And second, any time your defense of anything of anything rests on the phrase “PC police,” you lost that argument a long, long time ago.

Anyway, I see that 0% up there and all I can think of is that old SNL sketch where Jon Lovitz is giving Phil Hartman increasingly blunt bad news and Hartman just keeps shouting “GIVE IT TO ME STRAIGHT” and “WHAT’S THE WORD ON THE STREET?” It’s not online, but you can see an early version of it in Hartman’s SNL audition tape. It starts at about the 9:30 mark, but you should probably just watch the whole thing because Phil Hartman was a national treasure.
