Finally, Rick & The Governor, showdown on this mid-season finale of The Walking Dead.
Well, the premise gets set quick enough. Michonne and Hershel get kidnapped in the beginning of an attempt to take the prison.
Then, all of the chaos:
So… Li’l Ass Kicker? Thoughts?
Lotta blood there. I suspect the psycho sisters have her.
The Governor’s girlfriend sister took her.
A walker wouldn’t take time to undo the car seat, but they don’t really need to when they just chew her out of it and take off with the pieces…
I’m really hoping that’s not what happened.
Someone has her. I’m guessing it’s the sister of the governor’s girlfriend.
If they take the easy way out, she’s on the bus or with Lilly, who was covered in blood. If they’re following the books more closely like they said they were, then she’s dead and they just spared viewers a brutal death.
i would hope they stick to the comic and she’s just dead. the last thing i give a shit about is them looking for a that baby, one lost child storyline was enough.
Yeah at the end of the episode my big question was, would a zombie just eat a whole baby? And who just leaves a baby sitting in a baby seat in the middle of an attack during the zombie apocalypse?
She dead. This is what the last season finale should have been and we’re now back on track to following the comic almost perfectly. Woodbury was handled so very very poorly.
Stop trying to make the comic book happen.. its not gonna happen
Probably alive, and we’re supposed to think she’s dead. With everyone split up, someone else probably scooped her up and made off with her (maybe Michonne? maybe Beth?) rather than leave her there for the walkers.
The four kids had her, then they went to look for guns (and may or may not have taken Judith with them, but presumably they kept her close by since they went to the trouble of carting her around in the first place).
Then the four kids save Tyrese; two of them take off immediately, the two sisters cap the woman, then they take off…the wrong way, according to Tyrese, who, I believe, follows them. Again, we can presume that they’re going back for Judith.
My guess is that the kids & Tyrese have her. I’m also guessing that this group (Tyrese, the kids and Judith) will be encountering Carol in the latter half of the season.
If any human took her, they’d just grab the carrier handle.
^This. She’s dead.
Unless the writers do something else incredibly stupid, which I wouldn’t put outside the realm of possibility.
I believe you can see Michonne holding Lil Ass Kicker in previews of the next episodes.
Herschel replaced Tyreese from the comics, so where this storyline of Tyreese and his harem of little white girls goes is anybody’s guess.
@ Beastmode – and then does the shit hit the fan because Lizzy actually killed the two people and Carol covered for her, and Tyrese finds out somehow?
I dunno, I would’ve taken the baby out of the carrier. Have you ever tried to run with one of those goddamn things with a baby in it? Your center of balance is all fucked up and its awkward as hell.
@Laura – that’s my guess, certainly. It brings together several primary elements of tension from this season and stirs the pot nicely.
I say Michonne has her.
Go back and watch the episode again. When the tank fires for the last time, you clearly see Tyreese running from the area where Rick and Carl find Judith’s seat. His gun is bouncing around on his back, and he is carrying something in both arms. My speculation is that either Judith died from stray gunfire, and Tyreese didn’t want to leave her body for the walker, OR she was hit by stray gunfire, but only wounded. It’s possible also, that Tyreese was bleeding from his prior gunfight and it isn’t Judith’s blood at all we’re seeing. As for the doorknob who said “Any adult would have grabbed the car seat.” I’m a father, and any parent knows those seats add extra weight, and are clumsy to manage. If I thought I had a chance to take the child from the seat, and make a run for it, I would. Also, if Tyreese had taken the seat, we wouldn’t have had that dramatic Carl & Rick moment. So in short, either she’s alive or dead with Tyreese. The showrunners know what they’re doing – they wouldn’t put all those pieces together (Tyreese running, the car seat being bloody and unbuckled, Rick and Carl’s dramatic scene). There are so many things they could have show tasefully that would let us know without a doubt Judith had been killed by walkers, if that’s what they intended to imply.
I’m hoping one of the kids have her.
I’d like to call B.S. on this whole mid-season finale nonsense.
Also, go Lizzy.
Seems obvious. Too obvious? I hope they wouldn’t kill the baby like that.
It’s the grand karmic punishment for making speeches. This is known.
I see no reason why this episode couldn’t have happened last season for the finale.
Needless to say i they should had changed the Governor’s death from the comics to something more satisfying.
should have ended last season.
Pointless. Should have happened last year.
yeah, this could have all just happened last season and it would have actually made some damn sense. i find it extremely hard to believe that this new camp is just gonna decide to go murder a buncha people they don’t know and have never had problems with because some asshole they just met tells them it’s a good idea.
The official hater thread.
Um it was clearly built up to it. When the Governor took over, they had all these plans to fortify their existing area, then one walker just blows through and nearly kills his new creepo daughter. It was a wake up call that their crappy pits and fences were worthless, they needed something better. Makes more sense to me than the town of Woodbury deciding to go up in the prison shit.
This didnt happen last season because of the change in showrunners. I think we all may be able to enjoy this show a little more now. it seems to be on track.
Why? Because it was well translated that the fight was with the Governor, not Woodbury. And it worked thematically. Rick’s personal arc in Season 3 was him being increasingly shut off and paranoid of outsiders, something that had a fitting conclusion when he accepted a number of people into who were not too long before aiming down sights at him into his group. This is contrasted with the Governor, who reaches his ultimate low when he kills his own people. Rick has his best moment when the Governor has his worst. That would’ve been lost if the Season 3 finale was just a big, dumb shootout where the prisoners massacre the Woodbury guys.
Wow… Excellent Observation… !!! *Hand Claps*
CAWRL. This is how it will be said for the rest of my days.
For some reason, it reminded me of Randy Marsh shouting, “STAN! STAAAAAAN!”
It’s like the way JBL says MACHELL instead of of Michael.
his Southern accent just gets worse and worse as the seasons go on.
so not spelled “Carull??”
“Then, blah blah blah, Rick don’t negotiate with terrorists.”
Uh…but that’s what Rick was doing during said gif.
Who was the female zombie they focused in on at then end?
Remember that lady Rick found in the forest who was keeping her husband’s head in a bag? Her.
i don’t think that was her. it seemed like they made it pretty clear that he cut her head off and left it in the bag with her zombie husband’s at the end of that episode.
She’s wearing the same damn jacket Ayatollah. It is clearly her.
what, you don’t think these zombie chicks didn’t shop at the same H&M?
confirmed it was her on Talking Dead.
That was a pretty excellent moment.
Ohhhhhhh, I thought that was her! See, the zombie you don’t kill is the one that comes looking for you later!
I’m still waiting for them to bring Jim back from Season 1, after they left him to wander the Earth….
As long as Jim doesn’t marry zombie Pam, I’m all for it.
I thought she looked familiar.
Goddammit, Walking Dead, why you gotta’ kill Hershel?
Of all the characters that’ve died so far, I’ll miss him the most. No question.
Yep. Should have been Tyrese, Like the comics.
Tyrese has to be around to struggle with the decision on whether or not to hammer Crazy Lizzie when he finds out it was her and not Carol who killed and torched his lady even though Crazy Lizzie saved his life tonight.
I’m guessing Maggie will become the new moral compass.
Yep. She’s got a job to do.
If it was just like the comics, Hershel would’ve died anyway.
Stop trying to make the comic book happen.. Its not gonna happen
@MagSeven you are correct.
I was okay with Hershel going because I pretty much accept that was going to happen a few weeks back.
Rick: Can’t we all just get along?
The Governor: Bitch took my eye! Kill them all!
I knew they’d kill Hershel after the actor got that DUI, didn’t you guys watch Lost?
… Santa drinks?
He pretty much has to; you think it’s fun to compile that Naughty list every year, until you try it. It gets dark. Quickly.
RIP Ana Lucia.
I keep having metal images of Tyreese living with the semi-feral Crazy Killer Girls. Tyreese is not in charge of this group.
mental – damn auto correct.
I’m down for this scenario!
Only is Lizzie listens to Slayer…
That would be a pretty awesome sitcom. They would get into all sorts of shenanigans, and he would be upset, and every episode would end with hugs awww.
Yup, the feels. All the feels. This episode has totally mangled them.
Remember in Season 2 when they all the best shots in the world? Ah, the good old days.
Yep. Most of this firefight was like watching two platoons of Imperial Stormtroopers.
Remember a few episodes ago when most of the main characters were a good shot? Those were the good old days.
Landry/Todd shooting dot gif
They’ve always been shitty shots when someone is shooting back at them.
Everyone’s a shitty shot when somebody is shooting back at you.
someone needs to put a bell on carl or something… that’s just parenting 101…
Evidently Lil’ Ass Kicker has learnt some bad habits from her older brother too.
Kind of a stupid finale. I was ready to rage quit earlier, but, I think I talked myself into watching the second half. Not like the Walking dead is based on reality, but, jesus christ. The decisions and shooting and the lack of zombies until it was convenient was on D levels of stupidity
“Lack of zombies because it was convenient”? It couldn’t have been because zombies are attracted to sound and motherfu*ers were outside shooting hundreds of rounds and shelling the landscape with a goddamn tank, could it?
What I wanted to know was how did zombies appear behind the tank suddenly after it breached the yard of the prison, but none of them bothered Rick and The Governor during their little punch-up?
Keep in mind there were tons of people shooting in all directions, and I’m sure some zombies died (again) in the process. This episode certainly wasn’t about them, so it makes sense not to see them at all times.
Just RiffTrax it while watching it.
@Magseven: Exactly. Remember the night before when Rick and Carl shot up like 100 zombies and there was a town full of zombies like 2 miles away? Neither does the show.
@David: They can clearly tell those two alphas were fighting it out for warfare suprmacy. Thus, they let those two be, despite both being covered in blood.
@B Long: I get that. It’s just there were literally none around when the Governor showed up with his posse and the Jail Accord began.
Also, Zombies coming from the ground is bullshit.
They made a point of showing The Guv’s people getting shot through the chest, so it made sense to have a few show up right away…
How did the Governor sneak into the prison and leave that psycho bunny art? I hope there Is a theory on the in the recap
Without trying to be too spoilery, I’m guessing it was one of the girls that did it. Something similar happens with different characters in the book and it leads to a pretty fucked up storyline I didn’t think they’d do in the show…
If Dustin has his way, it’ll be all Gov, all the time.
“We need the prison because it has walls and fences”……..*steamrolls the fences with a tank, blows holes in walls*
I know right? Charlie from Fringe is the worst tactician ever.
To the Governors’s credit, at no point did anybody say “aren’t we here for the fences? I dunno, maybe we shouldn’t plow them down?”
That’s what happens when the poor man’s Vince Diesel is the #2
To Charlie from Fringe’s credit, at least he made it longer in this universe. Oh wait…
I thought Vin Diesel is the poor man’s Rock.
I’m kind of upset the named character death toll wasn’t hire. Beth and maybe Sasha or Bob shouldn’t have made it out alive.
Given the way they were all shooting, I’m surprised anyone died.
Stormtroopers have better aim.
Williwas has probably read too many of Dustin’s posts.
I was sure Beth was a goner.
Still wish Dale could have died again.
Andrea and Lori too.
While making the Ultimate Dale Face
Agreed. It should have started with the Governor inexplicably cutting Dale’s head off.
The biggest thing I had a problem with in this episode is when Darryl used the walker as a human-shield. We’ve seen bullets rip right through walkers since day one, why do they stop bullets now? Nit-picking, but it bothered me
That didn’t bother me as much as him using filing cabinets as shields. Really? The thinnest most flimsiest metal is stopping bullets?
The filing cabinets were filled with Kevlar?
Reminds me of that scene in the Sarah Connor Chronicles pilot, where Sarah takes cover behind a recliner, and the viewers were all: “Really? Bullet-proof cushions?”
Cut to the aftermath and it turned out that, yep, Sarah armoured the recliner, because she was damn well ready. Similarly, if they’ve put filing cabinets out for cover, they’ve probably filled them with all the old prison paperwork.
I bought the planters as shields, cause they are filled with dirt. But we had a fight in my house about the walker as a shield. Yes, Arnold has done it in a ton of movies, but walkers are flimsy & falling apart already. If you can punch their skulls off, you can’t expect them to absorb bullets.
Was thinking the same thing regarding the meat shields. Plus it was rifle calibre rounds being fired at the zombie.
Also the flimsy metal picnic table.
Yeah, that was pretty fantastic.
Oh man. That beheading scene is so much fucking worse than in the comic.
Worse as in “awful yet amazing”
So much to think.
So much to feel.
Right in the feels.
I wanted him to say “Alley-oop” or some equally, lame and inappropriately used basketball term.
Best episode of the season or best episode of the show?
Certainly best episode in seasons.
Best in 1 episode.
All 3 of you need to put the pipe down and walk away.
Best of this season for sure.
I’m betting Glenn went back and grabbed L.A.K.
Got my Hershel badge today. My heart hurts.
That’s rough, man. :-(
I got mine, too. Its like getting a Kennedy award on Nov 22nd.
Lucky. I only earn one badge for every 15 comments.
everybody else is hating but im just sitting here like “goddamn daryl was badass”
I so want to be bros with that guy. And i generally don’t like bros but there we are.
Woulda been better had he sky hooked it into the top….
I might criticize The Walking Dead here and there, but I’ll never criticize Daryl’s badassery.
Arrow to the chest. So did he do it to kill him or did he do it to hurt him enough that the walkers would rip him apart.
Also with no Herschel around I guess he won’t get the Carl treatment for killing someone who was giving up.
It’s always spaghetti Wednesday in heaven. RIP Herschel.
Aww *feels*…Herschel. Man what a way to go.
One day after, and that still hurts.
Aside from the A-Team style shootout, it was fairly satisfying.
I’m glad to see Lizzie finally start to live up to her potential.
And the delivery of “HE CHOPPED OFF A GUYS HEAD WITH A SWORD!” was perfectly timed self-awareness & comic relief.
That’s true. I absolutely appreciated that line.
He should have looked up at the Governor and said, “My name is Hershel Greene. And you can go fuck yourself.”
So who takes the award for best stand off kill of a main character this year? Roose Bolton, Uncle Jack, or the Governor?
THE ROOSE IS LOOSE #Redwedding
I’m gonna have to go with Roose on that one, but it’s close.
Yeah it has to be Roose. The other two were good though and all were very sad.
Wow that episode was actually really good. Normally I spend most of the duration of a walking dead episode mocking it but I really couldn’t with this one, It was tense, exciting and just very well done.
Ugh, just ugh. Rick and Shane finally get to have the conversation about Carol after what feels like 5 episodes. Who kills The Guv? Not Maggie, not Michonne, not Rick, not even zombies. The fucking MILF kills him. And they saw Rick go behind the bus and then was all surprised when he jumped out. They go back to the damn rat thing…with no answer. the Kardashians have better writing. The only thing worthwhile was the two little girls going all killy kill. I hope the spinoff is just them roaming the countryside.
I meant the guy with the stupid haircut, not Shane.
You must be new. And I don’t mean uproxx, I mean the Internet.
I agree that she was a bit of a Milf and that’s it.
I don’t think I was watching the same show.
this episode made my stomach hurt. which is the first time an amc show not named Breaking Bad has done that.
I was going to say the same thing. We have spent a lot of time talking about its flaws, but fuck if it didn’t deliver in instilling the chaos of such a situation. So many things happening at the same moment, so many characters to care about hoping for them not to die off camera… I was FREAKING OUUT!
I’m betting Tara has Lil Ass Kicker, and is hiding out in the prison.
I didn’t think Tara even made it through the fence. I thought she took off as soon as the shooting began.
And Daryl killed a tank. Because of course Daryl fucking Dixon can take a motherfucking tank.
Daryl Dixon can just look at a tank & it blows up. My tank blows up when I look at him.
He makes ovaries explode weekly, a tank was nothing.
By tank, I mean vajayjay.
I quite enjoyed the arrow shot to Mitch.
So, what the heck is the second half of the season going to be based on, besides looking for all their friends?
On one hand, kudos for not drawing the governor story line out anymore, on the other, felt like it ended too abruptly.
So what was the point of carol being in the flash backs? Obviously, they serve as terrible Chekov’s guns,
I honestly expected carol to inexplicably show up during the climax.
It was to account for the fact Rick & Daryl were having the discussion abut her.
Yeah, it’s been 4 episodes since Rick booted her and they only just discussed it this episode so we needed a reminder.
I was expecting Carol to show up in her own tank…. a BIGGER tank! Mwahahahahah
This was like dragon ball z levels of stalling dialogue. “We can live together!” – ” NO. We can’t” rinse and repeat 10 minutes later. Then the confrontation takes place at the 51 minute mark. My patience is low on this show after this half season of stalling/redoing what should’ve been done last season.
My guess is they’ll be on the road the rest of the season and find the next settlement at the end of the season. It would be cool to see a cannibal storyline in the meantime.
Also-kinda feel like only one person died being Hershel. For me the Gov was a foregone conclusion. Judith being unanswered. Characters like the daughter, the lesbian gf, and Woodbury pt 2 randoms… Didn’t really feel weighty. This ep wouldve felt more dire with another prison main die off.
You didn’t find the blah blah blah blah blah part fascinating?
At one stage I was hoping for a tank shell to hit the bus.
Chimpo, I thought the same exact thing.
As far as we’ve seen, the Gov hasn’t done anything for those people besides get them into a standoff with strangers, and then he lops off Hershel’s head while Rick is offering them shelter. All they know about Rick and Co. is what the Gov told them, and who the hell is he? I was expecting the whole tank crew to just up and throw down their weapons, since the only one the prison had a problem with was the Gov. anyway. Tara was the only sane person in that group.
Good point, but this guy seems to be a leader & in those situations, some people will grab any leader they can find to help keep them safe, etc.
MIchonne knew he was a goner. Let him turn.
Did Anyone Else notice that The Governor saw Rick Clearly with Both Eyes before He chopped-of Hershel’s Head… ???
So, people here are still complaining. I think it’s time for some of you to just quit.
I always wonder what makes people comment on a TV show thread about how bad it is. Why are you watching then??
Thing is, I get that a show with such a promising premise but shat the bed so, so many times is obviously fair game, critic wise. All I’m saying is at some point, when even a good episode makes you angry for not being Breaking Bad, but being what it is (inconsistent and uneven yet entertaining and suspenseful) it is time to stop.
HOLY SHIT. NO PRISONERS!
I think Lizzy and Carl have a future together.
I support this coupling.
Just….DAMN SON. That was intense.
Well this is easily explained. (Puts on lab coat) As we can see in figure A, The shootout was BECAUSE FUCKING MURDER.
