Let’s See Who Is Trying To Ruin An Adorable Cheerios Commercial This Time

Perhaps you remember back in May, when a Cheerios commercial starring a multi-racial family set off a media firestorm due to racist comments on its YouTube page. It was awful. The comments and the firestorm, I mean. Not the commercial. The commercial was twelve kinds of adorable. And now there’s another one, as Josh noted in his Super Bowl commercial round-up post, which features the same family, now having a precious discussion about babies and puppies. It’s sweet and wonderful and well-made.

LET’S SEE WHO IS GOING TO TRY TO RUIN IT THIS TIME.

POLITICS!

Last night, after the commercial hit the Internet, MSNBC jumped at the chance to make this about politics by tweeting “Maybe the rightwing will hate it, but everyone else will go awww: the adorable new #Cheerios ad w/ biracial family” with a link to the ad. The backlash was immediate, with conservative groups starting the hashtag “#MyRightWingBiracialFamily” on Twitter, and generally slinging mud back at MSNBC until the network this issued apology:

And now, as if the whole thing hadn’t already gotten wildly out of hand, the Republican National Committee has put out an official memo calling for the boycott of MSNBC, with a screenshot of the tweet right up at the top:

Let’s recap: A 24-hour news network took an unnecessary cheap shot at its political opponents. Said political opponents freaked out. The 24-hour news network deleted the cheap shot and apologized. Then, the leadership of one of the country’s two major political groups put out an official statement condemning the network. Now, everyone is yelling at each other. Again.

OVER A CUTE COMMERCIAL ABOUT BABIES AND PUPPIES THAT DOESN’T EVEN DEBUT ON TELEVISION FOR THREE MORE DAYS.

The lesson here, as it always is, is that politics ruin everything.
