Robert Evans Is Producing A Wild, Coke-Fueled Series Based On 70s Era Hollywood, So Get Excited

Television news like this just gets me too excited. I need to do a cocktail of downers chased by a few lines of coke just to be stable for the day. The life of a hot shot blogger working his way to the very bottom.

Robert Evans did the opposite and that’s why he gets to use his amazing history and clout to create a pay-cable series based on Hollywood during the “New Hollywood” era in the 70s. From Deadline:

The vision of the series is much darker than the contemporary inside Hollywood depicted in Entourage. Set in the ’70s with a creative tone similar to Casino, it involves the last days before studios were taken over by conglomerates, when they were run by wily entrepreneurs, and where there was a mob influence, drugs, sex, excess, casting couches, and some of the best movies made in the 20th century. The protagonist is an outsider who against the odds rises to become a king in Hollywood in a tale of power, legacy, and the American dream.

The “New Hollywood” is one of the few things I don’t buy into as baby boomer trite that gets paraded out for everyone to fawn over. You have the evidence on the screen and at the video store to prove that.  Not to mention that Robert Evans is a coked-up crazy man who brought some of the biggest movies of the era to the screen and has a million stories to tell. Not to mention that he influenced Dustin Hoffman’s character in Wag The Dog, one of my favorites of all time.

The other plus is this isn’t based on Evans himself, instead taking a more fictional route with anecdotes and stories worked in from the period. We do not need another Kid Notorious, so I’m happy Evans is taking the behind the scenes approach.  I expect nothing but cocaine and bedding starlets 24/7. So exactly like Entourage, but good.

Just to drive home how excited this news makes me and should make you, I’ve included Patton Oswalt’s Robert Evans bit below. You should also venture out to find Evan’s book, The Kid Stays In The Picture, to get a real feel for the classic Hollywood. Back before everything was formulaic and corporate. When guys like Sam Peckinpah were injecting themselves in the ass with B-12 on the streets and waking up next to a different hooker everyday. Wild times.
