This rumor comes from the site Comicbook.com. I have no idea what the track record for the site Comicbook.com is, so all of this could be pure bullsh*t, but I do know that they have had some intel from The Walking Dead that others have not had, so there may be something to it. For instance, [SPOILERS] Comicbook.com floated the deductive possibility that the Governor may not be dead based on an image they had from an official AMC photo.
Look closely:

See, there’s a bullet hole in The Governor’s head, owed to being shot by Lilly in the mid-season finale. HOWEVER, that shot wasn’t actually in the episode. All viewers saw was Lilly pointing the gun at The Governor’s head and pulling the trigger. Viewers didn’t see actual proof of The Governor’s death, leaving open the possibility that The Governor may return should, say, David Morrissey’s pilot not to go air, or AMC decides later on that they need a big ratings stunt.
Anyway, that speculation was flamed by Comicbook.com (and I had not previously seen that photo of The Governor), so adjust your expectations accordingly for their next rumor. They ran down five theories on the rest of season five, and the first four are fairly benign and/or obvious. For instance, they note that Rick’s group will be divided (obvious from where last season ended), that Carl will carry his own episode (suggested in a clip that aired on The Talking Dead), that there will be more Daryl Dixon (there would have to be, seeing as he was not used that much in the first half of season four) and that Carol will return (which has actually been confirmed). But here’s the last bit:
A Major Character Dies – Ok, predicting that someone else will die before Season 4 of The Walking Dead wraps up is pretty much like predicting the sun will rise in the morning. However, we’ve got a pretty good indication of which cast member will be dying, and let’s just say it will be a real shocker. If what we believe is correct, then one of the main cast members who has not been killed in the comic book series will die during Season 4.
I have no idea what their source is, but — again, Spoilers — one of the main cast members who has not been killed in the comic book series yet basically narrows it down to four people: Michonne, Maggie, Carl, and Rick.
Who among those is most likely to die? If Maggie or Michonne die, well, we riot (maybe not a full-blown Daryl Dies riot, but cars will be smashed, goal posts will be carried off the field). They can’t kill Rick because he’s the lead, and that just doesn’t make any sense, although I think most viewers would be OK with it. That pretty much leaves Carl, and if Carl is getting his own episode, so to speak, it makes even more sense, as dramas often like to give dying characters their big swan song episodes before their deaths (see, e.g., Hershel last season). Also, because AMC has a track record of listening to fan chatter in the past and killing off unpopular characters (Lori, Andrea). Carl certainly fits that bill.
So, there you have it: Carl will die in season four. Probably. Maybe. Perhaps. There’s definitely a chance.

I’d celebrate if Michonne dies. She’s a terrible character. I can’t count the number of times that I wished while watching an episode that the Governor (or anyone) would kill her.
Again, that’s because the tv show ruined the character.
Shit, she’s way worse in the comic. Crazy and will bang any man as long as he fits the single criteria of being black.
Lisa Lampanelli: Zombie huntress.
Michonne sucks in the show. We do not riot if she dies. I wouldn’t care about Maggie dying either if she wasn’t the hottest woman to look at on the show. I’d rather not see the Asian dude die, but I’ll settle for it. Carl can get killed off screen with no explanation and I’d probably forget he was ever on the show.
I’d watch that show
Yep I was hoping some random member of the Governor’s militia would gun her done.
Leave it to Dustin to predict the Gov coming back.
I just saw this same story on io9 but it included quotes from Morrisey about the character.
“Something happened to him. I feel like a shady politician where I can’t confirm and I can’t deny anything. Certainly, bad things befell him at the end of the last episode but we just have to wait and see.”
Really feel like it’s just going to be a flashback.
Well, he HAS to come back so that Lizzie (?) can kill him because DUH, SHEEPLE, WHY DON”T YOU SEE WHAT IS SO OBVIOUS?????
If they really wanted to shock fans of the series, they wouldn’t kill anyone else off for the rest of the season. Seriously, people would wait and then nothing. It would be a sigh of relief.
And then season five, the aliens invade.
Walking Dead meets Falling Skies?
So if they didn’t show The Governor’s corpse, and he could possibly be returning, and that picture is from AMC but it isn’t a scene we saw in the show, couldn’t this just be that he will “appear” in a flashback scene where we see his body with the bullet in his head being burned with the rest of the corpses or something?
or maybe the image is from a scene that didn’t make the final cut of the episode?
Yeah exactly, I mean anything other than a flashback or stuff off the cutting room floor would be such a hilarious fuck you to the fans who insist this show is competent.
If they truly wanted to shock me, they’d have a quiet episode where the characters talk about things and I get to know details about their former lives and feelings and family and whatnot.
As much as I enjoy the show, it’s weakest element is that most of the characters are just tropes. The governor’s 3-episode arc took the time to make him human, and that was just so they could kill him off.
Dude, all they did in the first season of this show was sit around and talk, lest we forget “Andrea and her sister in a boat for 10 minutes talking about fishing with their father,” possibly the worst scene in television history.
Sitting around and talking is definitely not what this show needs more of.
If the Governor comes back, I’ll riot. Or not. I’ll probably just stop watching the show. His redemption episodes were terrible and led to a pretty meh mid season finale.
And a big dramatic standoff at the prison! Again…
They can’t kill Stark, he’s the lead (head falls off) NO!
SPOILER, dammit!
Tony dies in iron man 3? Shane Black what have you done?
@MonkeyButt Oh go fuck yourself, it was almost 3 years ago at this point. How long is it Everyone Else On The Internet’s problem to worry about what you have and haven’t seen? 2+ years seems sufficient.
Holy christ, it was a joke. Calm the fuck down buddy.
MB, use your sarcasm font next time. Jeez.
Haha, Lahey needs to switch to decaf for his new year’s resolution.
Note to self: don’t ask Lahey if his refrigerator is running.
Holy shit, Stark dies?!
Hey MB – Rick’s been dead the whole time.
“Viewers didn’t see actual proof of The Governor’s death, leaving open the possibility that The Governor may return”
Ah, yes, because it’s all a part of that classic trope: if you don’t see a character’s body completely vaporized before your very eyes, he can’t be dead yet!
If they killed Maggie, I’d be…indifferent. They can kill Maggie. No riots here.
It would be a great kick in the head if they kill Daryl.
I don’t hate the guy but it would be fun to see fanbase bitching all around facebook.
Heads would be exploding world wide. We’d have to have an official day of mourning, nobody would get any work done the next Monday.
Not that I want it to happen, but it seems that Daryl’s death is the only thing that COULD shock the fanbase at this point.
And he hasn’t technically been killed off in the comic series yet, so…
It’s almost a necessary evil. People love him SO much, but if you wanted to throw reality into it, there is almost no way he would have survived this long.
Yes, “necessary evil” is a good way to put that.
Or to look at it another way: from an entertainment standpoint, I know that it would suck to not have Daryl around. From a dramatic/narrative standpoint, Daryl’s death would make the most sense.
I know the writers have listened to the audience about some decisions, but I hope they would make that decision based on the story itself. Like George RR Martin says, anybody can die!
Great MonkeyButt. Now we know Martin kills more major characters. Will your spoilers never stop?
Pshaw, you know nothing! I’m not saying a word to nobody nohow.
I think they will eventually but there hasn’t been enough Daryl this season to kill him off.
I think it would be more dramatic if Daryl actually took a bath. He’s starting to look pretty nasty.
Kill Maggie so the actress can move on to something good.
Kill Maggie so the actress can move onto something on Starz or HBO.
By which I mean, something with nudity.
Fixed it for you.
TITS!
“They ran down five theories on the rest of season five”
That would be season four.
I like Carl…
You mean, COOOORRRRAALLL.
If the Governor comes back, I’m done with this increasingly shitty show. I’m fine with them killing anyone and everyone and I’d even love it if we’d kill all of the people making stupid decisions and pick up with a new cast that’s trying to do something more than just sit still and not die.
If they kill Carl in Season 4 I’ll start watching the show more often in Season 5.
I don’t care whether Lilly shot the Gov or not, he can’t be brought back either way. There is no way the walkers headed toward his body didn’t stop and devour him. And there is no way anyone can realistically argue that he was able to get away. He was too incapacitated by then. His corpse was eaten by walkers. Period.
stop saying “we riot” about stupid tv shows, dorks.
We riot due to your comment.
/looks back…..nobody :(
@Ayatollah of Rock and Rolla, seconded.
If society breaks down and we’re forced to join a leather-daddy motorcycle gang and fight a desert tribe for fuel on the orders of a bodybuilder in a gimp mask, we riot.
ATTICA! ATTICA!
It seems pretty obvious that the Governor would only come back as a zombie and that would probably be saved for a crazy ending scene in the season finale. And if they kill of Carl, assuming that Lil’ Ass-Kicker never made it out alive, then season 5 should be called “The Season where Rick gives zero f*cks.” I think we’ll probably see Maggie kick it following her reuniting with Glenn and then some half ass wedding ceremony.
I’m good with Carl dying
great, now every recap from here on out Dustin is going to waste at least a paragraph on his latest theories for why The Governor is still not dead despite overwhelming and definitive evidence to the contrary.
How is that any different from when he wasted at least a paragraph on his theories that the Gov was behind every single thing in the prison, in EVERY SINGLE weekly recap, despite the insane amounts of evidence to the contrary?
Oh it’s not any different. I was just hoping we would be past it by then.
Oh. Your hope springs eternal & then is wasted.
There’s probably more justification for the Governor coming back than there is for dissident’s hope that Dustin will stop with his stupid theories.
I’m just afraid of the ego trip we’ll see if that happens. A stopped clock is only right twice & all that, but they usually crow pretty loudly when they are right.
If they don’t kill Carl soon, they’re going to have a real Walt problem. He’s already a foot taller than he was in the pilot.
I’m pretty sure that Lori is nursing the Governor back to health somewhere in the back of the prison.
Glenn. Yeah he’s dead in the comics but I think his characters time has come…
Or Bad Acting Carl
I’d keep Glenn around until they introduce a certain someone to the plot. Glenn can rebound after having a terrible first half of the season.
If the Governor were to not be dead after the mid season finale, I’d stop watching TWD altogether. Forever. Wouldn’t even care if they went to full nudity and Maggie ends up meeting Kate Upton and they have a passionate sex scene.
Out of the four given, I’d be OK with Maggie dying. She’s been pretty bland for a long time. Carl is on the verge of being a total badass, so I want to see how that plays out.
+1
They’ve dragged on the Governor character for too long. Move on.
If the Governor is in the series anymore, it’s only in one of three cases. 1) The very beginning of episode 9, we see him dying or being chewed on in front of the prison 2) Ghost 3) Dream. Not exactly looking forward to that but wouldn’t be surprised.
If their sources are correct and one of the four living in the comics is to die, I’m going to say Maggie. (I’ve read the comics all the way up to current issue #118) Not saying Rick is going to live forever, I just think it’s too early for them at this point to kill the main character. They may be trying to claim he isn’t on the show, but he is in the comics and if he were to die now they’d lose a massive chunk of their viewing audience. They’ve been excitedly talking about future scenes between Carl and Negan so that’s a no go. Leaving Michonne and Maggie. Michonne I personally think is too crucial to the oncoming storyline to leave just yet. Maggie ay this time in the comics tried committing suicide after losing the last of her family and the prison (obviously failed). But she just witnessed her father’s execution. In the comic Tyreese had the death by decapitation, Hershel was shot & if I remember right she didn’t see. There’s a lot more emotional damage for her on the tv show. Whether or not she succeeds this time in hanging herself or lets her guard down enough to be shot or eaten, my moneys on her.
Good point, but Maggie does basically watch the governor slice Hershel’s head off. It’s Glenn that doesn’t know, as he was in the cell block when it happened. I really hope she doesn’t die cuz she’s way too pretty for that lol. Idk why but I think there’s a chance of Carl dying. It’d be really dumb if AMC did that tho.
Carl won’t die. I suspect he’s in it for the long haul. Maggie I can see dying.
Agreed. Everyone (cast, producers) love him. It’s definitely Maggie. A nice flip of what happened in the comic, and right in line with the insane paranoia over her that Glen has been exhibiting.
Glenn is the one who will die at the hands of the next big bad in the seaso finale and that will fuel the tension for the next season
I’m confused. How does a picture of the Gov. with a bullet hole in his forehead prove he’s NOT dead?
I think it’d be really cool if they showed the governor dead through the eyes of Carol. She wasn’t there in the fight (Tentbury vs. Prison) and maybe her and her group will go there to find the prison completely destroyed. This could also solve (continue) the traitor feeding rats to walkers and maybe what happens to Judith? Michonne could also join her group temporarily. It would just be really REALLY stupid if they brought back a character who was stabbed, lost an eye, will to live, shot, and beat up.
it’s worth noting, nervously, that another main character who has not died in the comics is daryl. i think we all assume he’ll be ok, but if you’re saying it’s a major character who has not died in the comics…
I was going to mention that too. They could kill Daryl as he’s never been in the comics to kill. No one is ever safe on this show. And it would be a huge bit of stunt killing to off him because AMC is crazy enough to think that would make big splash in the ratings (which is nuts, but these are the same people who were going to cancel Breaking Bad and Madmen.)
But if they think they’d have the same reaction as the Red Wedding and that people would be okay with that they don’t understand the difference between why we like Daryl and why Robb Stark wasn’t that big of a loss.
My money is on Glenn; Kids like Coooooorl don’t cost as much raise-wise on series tv
Or none of them die and Carl ends up getting shot in the eye but surviving.
I’m Good with Everyone dying and it becoming a story about a different group of people on the other side of the globe.
Daryl must live, that is all
If Daryl dies i’m not rioting, as a matter of fact I’ll stand up and clap! Daryl Dixon is the most overrated tv virgin of all times, it’s actually getting nauseating how some people hype up that character. Carl can go too, Chandlers acting hasn’t gotten better at all through 4.5 seasons.
I would love to see what happens if Daryl dies.
I don’t know, sometime between season three and four I just fell off the bandwagon. Not excited about Walking Dead as I used to be.
Yeah, because a lot of people can survive a samurai sword going through your chest.
Carl is the safest character I hate to say to all of the haters. He is my favorite character, he has so much development that can and will be done that it would be stupid of them to do. For the past couple of days I have assumed that it will be Maggie, she is the most likely to for and they would do that because then it would give Glenn a lot of development because he will end up loosing Hershel and Maggie both. Rick and Michonne are both safe too because they have a lot of development still, Especially Michonne. But Rick is more likely to die before Carl does.

I know I am writing after season 4 is done..and I am still in the process of watching it…and I already know Glenn and Maggie make it through this season…but with season 5 approaching I have to say..I am okay with anyone going in this new season… except Glenn and Maggie..They bring a love story equivalent to any on screen romance …which is a respite in this apocalyptic world…and helps balance the gore of the zombies and the ruthlessness/ callousness of some of the other characters…
