LeVar Burton’s Reading Rainbow Kickstarter project already screamed past its original goal of $1 million and is now more than 2/3 of the way to its new $5 million target. But, as the age-old saying goes, the first $3.7 million is the easy part. How does he plan to bring in the rest before the July 2nd deadline? Why, with live events and beloved special guest stars. I mean, obviously.

Reading Rainbow Live! is a series of one-time-only events where I’m inviting you to bring your child and join us for a few hours. My friends and I will read from a few children’s books. We’ll all watch a classic episode of Reading Rainbow together, and everyone will go home with some special goodies. And afterward, there will also be a smaller Meet & Greet reception where a small number of families can join us to take photos, sign autographs and talk!
Right now there are four live events scheduled: The Men of Star Trek, featuring Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, Michael Dorn, and Robert Picardo; The Women of Star Trek, featuring Marina Sirtis, Gates McFadden, Jeri Ryan and Kate Mulgrew; and standalone, one-guest episodes featuring William Shatner and Patrick Stewart. William Shatner and Patrick Stewart reading children’s books? Yup, that oughta do it.
NOTE: The funniest part of this is that the explanation specifically says “And remember, we’ll be reading childrens’ books — so please use at least one of your three tickets to bring a child along!,” as though LeVar Burton has been to enough Star Trek events to know that 40-year-old sci-fi fans will probably outnumber children at these readings 10:1 if he doesn’t at least try to head them off. You can practically hear him sighing.
