Over the weekend, the Daytime Emmy Awards were aired not on television, but on the Internet. In fact, you can watch the livestream of it here, although I wouldn’t bother unless you’re a huge fan of train wrecks. Since it was not televised, nobody gave a sh*t. Host Kathy Griffin’s off-color jokes were a little more off color than usual (she suggested that Mario Lopez had venereal diseases, that Susan Lucci once had Sarah Michelle Geller fired from All My Children), and in a moment I actually did watch (at the tail end of the show), Griffin interrupted the speech for Best Drama and told the producer of Young and the Restless to “Wrap it up, lady!” before telling her that she’d better not “thank her f**king dog.”
Among other train wreck highlights were Sharon Osbourne dropping a series of f-bombs and getting a standing ovation from the audience for telling them to “just f**king get pissed” because the show wasn’t being televised; Kelly Monaco offering to show her boobs; and Katie Couric being booed for not showing up to accept her award (she was getting married this weekend).
The part that stirred the biggest controversy, however, was the red carpet show (which, at two hours, lasted longer than the ceremony itself). I watched a few minutes of it, and it was hilariously bad the way train wrecks can be. They brought in four “social media experts” — Brittany Furlan, Lauren Elizabeth, Jessica Harlow and Meghan Rosette — who know nothing about Daytime Television, and they just shot the sh*t with the attendees, which mostly amounted to coming on to them very hard and saying awkward, inappropriate things. For instance, they introduced Lawrence Saint-Victor from The Bold and the Beautiful as “a beautiful chocolate man” and asked him what it was like to be a black man on a soap opera. Yikes. They also suggested a younger kid was jail bait before finding out that he was over 18 and exclaiming, “He’s legal!”
But by far, the joke that made the most headlines was when Furlan and Elizabeth basically threw themselves at Ryan Paevey (from General Hospital) and made a lot of jokes about what they would do to him if they had the opportunity (Paevy, for his part, was encouraging them with handcuffs jokes). As he left, Furlan said: ““We’re going to get you away from us before we rape you.” (It’s at around the 18 minute mark in the livestream).
All 12 people who were watching the show went apoplectic. Ten of them were so mad they took to Twitter. Here were their reactions:
You’re hot, fuck me. I want to rape you. You’re black. #DaytimeEmmys

I think in between the rape joke and the black man comment, it is being lost that Jen Lilley was felt up. This was a disaster. #DaytimeEmmys

If a male red carpet host told a hot female he wanted to rape her, he’d never work a day in his life again. #JustSayin #DaytimeEmmys
