You Should Really Watch This Astonishing ‘Last Week Tonight’ Segment On Gay Rights In Uganda

If you’re still not watching John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight on HBO, it’s time to change that. Dude is just knocking it out of the park every Sunday night, illuminating social injustices expertly with penetrating wit and an acid tongue. Last night’s big segment was on the brutal treatment of gay men and women in Uganda and how anti-gay American Jesus freaks are helping to inflame the problem.

“Calling Uganda’s laws ‘harsh’ doesn’t really do them justice,” Oliver quipped. That’s like calling Stalin ‘a bit of a grump’…Or the Titanic a ‘disappointing vacation.'” He went on to add that “people from the dark ages could build a time machine, travel to 2014 Uganda, step outside and go, ‘Ah sh*t, it didn’t work.'”

The show closed with Oliver interviewing Pepe Julian Onziema, a Ugandan gay rights activist. Or, as I like to call him, one amazingly brave motherf*cker.
