Good Things Happen To Good People: A Very Minor, But Very Beloved ‘Community’ Actor Gets A Major TV Gig

Most of you guys don’t follow Charley Koontz on Twitter. Most of you probably don’t even know who Charley Koontz is. But you sure as hell know who Fat Neil is from Community. If you’ve followed his Twitter feed, Koontz is basically the nicest guy, and though he has had only a minor role in five seasons of Community, there’s hardly a bigger cheerleader for the show. He’s good people, and after five years in the industry basically playing glorified extras, Koontz has a full-time gig with a real benefits package.

After its lead, Patricia Arquette, Koontz is the first addition to CBS’s new CSI spin-off, Cyber. From Deadline:

Inspired by the work of real-life Cyber-Psychologist Mary Aiken, CSI: Cyber centers on Special Agent Avery Ryan (Arquette) who heads the Cyber Crime Division of the FBI, a unit at the forefront of solving illegal activities that start in the mind, live online, and play out in the real world. The project originated as CSI spinoff episodes on CSI last season, which only featured Arquette. The rest of the series’ cast is currently being assembled, with Koontz as the first actor locked in. Koontz plays Agent Daniel Grummitz with the Cyber Crime Division — a social introvert and a tech genius with a quick wit and self-deprecating honesty. Workaholic by day and night, Grumitz rarely, if ever, goes home. Indeed, he spends countless hours cracking cyber cases while on the clock. Off the clock, he practices penetration tests on Conficker clones.

I didn’t say it was a great gig, but it’s a steady one. He’s a series regular with a weekly paycheck, and considering how these CSI series work out for CBS, Fat Neil will be able to afford the extra super deluxe editions of Dungeons and Dragons for years to come. I wonder how Koontz is celebrating?

The one downside, however, is that this is no longer true:
