David Letterman Reflects On His 38-Year Friendship With Robin Williams, And Yes, You Will Lose It

There were a lot of tributes, a lot of incredible pieces, and a lot of beautiful things said of Robin Williams last week, but somehow, having David Letterman devote part of his show to the memory of Robin Williams makes it feel really real for me. It’s probably the montage at the end, which is where I lost it.

Letterman, of course, has known Robin Williams for nearly 40 years, dating back to their time together at the Comedy Store, which Lettermans speaks about at length here. Williams was also on Letterman’s shows over 50 times, and that’s how they became close friends over the years.

“Beyond being a very talented man and a good friend and a gentleman, I’m sorry, like everyone else, I had no idea that the man was in pain, that the man was suffering. But what a guy, Robin Williams” Letterman said, clearly holding back tears.
