Amy Poehler’s First ‘SNL’ Sketch Made Fun Of Another NBC Show

Amy Poehler, who’s celebrating her 43rd birthday with waffles today, made her SNL debut on September 29, 2001. It was also the show’s first episode after 9/11. Reese Witherspoon and Alicia Keys attempted to heal a grieving nation, but America didn’t learn how to laugh again until the next episode, when Seann William Scott was the host and Sum 41, the musical guest. SNL Archive claims Poehler’s first on-screen appearance was during “Wake Up, Wakefield” in the Witherspoon episode, but I watched it and didn’t see her, and another one of her sketches was cut in dress rehearsal.

Meaning, as far as I can tell, this was her introduction to anyone who thought UCB stood for “Utterly Cracked Butt” and didn’t see her performance as Ruth in Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo.
