Tickets To The ‘Game Of Thrones’ IMAX Screenings Are Selling Like Hotcakes

In news that also serves as the latest entry in our ongoing, frequently updated collection “People Seem to Enjoy Game of Thrones,” those IMAX screenings of the final two episodes from last season — “Watchers on the Wall” and “The Children” — that were announced a few weeks ago are selling out across the country. According to Entertainment Weekly, a number of the 200 theaters that booked this weekend’s screenings have already sold out, and interest is continuing to accelerate. That’s even more impressive when you consider that the screenings already had to be pushed back once to add more theaters.

[IMAX Entertainment CEO Greg] Foster said he had an instinct the acclaimed fantasy hit would perform well. “We announced this and our website crashed,” Foster said. “As soon as that happened, my instinct didn’t matter; [the interest] became empirical. Then a week later, we announced we were moving the date to accommodate more theaters, and the website crashed again — twice. So that was a pretty good indication.”

If you want an idea of what a cultural phenomenon Game of Thrones is right now, maybe try zooming out to 30,000 feet and thinking of this news this way: Movie theaters are offering people the chance to pay exorbitant prices to show up on Super Bowl weekend and watch remastered episodes of a show they just watched six months ago (and can still watch anytime they like online from the comfort of their own homes), and tickets sold out days or weeks in advance. I mean, in context it all makes sense, but still, that’s really something.
