‘The Simpsons’ Executive Producer Al Jean Pokes A Few Holes In The Homer Coma Theory

As with most fan theories, they don’t hold much water once the creators behind the show start talking. That’s what has happened to the recent theory involving Homer Simpson’s coma from 1993 and it’s influence on The Simpsons since that point.

It was a pretty convincing case, with video evidence and deep reddit threads that provide plenty of avenues for truth to exist on. Here’s a taste from the original thread:

“October 1992: Homer The Heretic airs and ends with Homer talking to God.

Homer: God, I gotta ask you something. What’s the meaning of life?
God: Homer, I can’t tell you that.
Homer: C’mon!
God: You’ll find out when you die.
Homer: I can’t wait that long!
God: You can’t wait six months?

April 1993 (SIX MONTHS LATER): So It’s Come To This: A Simpsons Clip Show airs and involves Bart’s April Fools prank inadvertently putting Homer into the hospital, where he is then crushed by a vending machine and put in a coma.”

Of course this sparked the minds over at TMZ to seek confirmation from the folks behind the hit Fox show and they managed to rouse Al Jean from his slumber to comment on the theory. The result? Well you can read, right? From TMZ:

“It would mean back in 1993 we would presume the show was going on for years and years more and right before we left, threw this hidden monkey wrench in for all our successors,” adding, “I’m afraid it goes with the ‘Dead Bart’ episode in the intriguing but false file.”

So it’s back to square one for the show. Everything is real, everything has happened (at least in the show universe AND outside of those Halloween episodes), and Homer is out of his coma. That means that weird alien episode from earlier in the season is just as real as Bleeding Gums Murphy’s death.

So in conclusion, there’s only one thing left to say about all of this…
