The Clue In ‘American Horror Story: Freak Show’ That Led To Lady Gaga In ‘Hotel’

Throughout Season 4 of American Horror Story: Freak Show, which might as well have been subtitled “Bad Nirvana Covers,” Ryan Murphy teased that if fans looked hard enough, they’d find clues of what to expect for season five, which we now know is about “HOTEL HELL.” Oh, it’s just a normal “Hotel?” That’s disappointing. Anyway, in “Edward Mordrake (Part 2),” there’s an out of place close-up of a coffee cup with a top-hat logo. At the time, Murphy told EW, “That is a big season five clue! It’s an arcane clue, but it’s very purposeful, and it illuminates something that you’ll be like, ‘Oh! You dirty bastard!’” (That is not the first or last time he’s been called a bastard.)

Apparently, it was a nod to Lady Gaga’s eventual casting.

The image was directing viewers not only to the theme (the classic 1935 film Top Hat is set in a hotel) but also to Gaga (the song “Cheek to Cheek” was written originally for Top Hat and is the title of Gaga’s current duets album with Tony Bennett). (Via)

The first track on that album is also a clue to Murphy’s writing style: “Anything Goes.”
