John Oliver Tore Into New Hampshire For Slamming A Bill Proposed By Fourth Graders

In a clip from Last Week Tonight with John Oliver from last month, but just uploaded to the show’s YouTube today, a New Hampshire fourth grade class crafted a bill as part of a civics project to make the Red-Tailed Hawk the official New Hampshire state raptor, and they visited the state capital to learn how government worked. So cute, right? How could the New Hampshire government deny the fourth graders a bill that literally affects or hurts nobody, especially when the class showed up to the house gallery to watch their bill come to vote and see government happening before their precious, innocent little eyes?

OH, WELL YOU JUST WAIT.

We already told you about State Rep. Warren Groen’s abortion comments during the session, but there was apparently a parade of descenting opinions about the bill that followed, like the one woman who said: “We already have a state bird, but do we need a state raptor? Isn’t that a bird? Isn’t that an animal?” But that was nothing compared to the guy who compared it to choosing a state hot dog.

What the f*ck is wrong with these people? Suffice to say, the kids bill did not get passed, but as a result, Last Week Tonight decided to make the Red-Tailed Hawk the official raptor of Last Week Tonight. Sorry, kids. It’s little consolation for your state government being run by a bunch of jackasses, but it will have to do.
