Sorry, ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ But ‘South Park’ Perfected Killing Off A Main Character

Spoiler Alert: If you didn’t watch Grey’s Anatomy, and you have avoided the internet up until this point, you may want to close this window right now and go watch the show so you can stop hiding from the cold truth.

On last night’s episode of every babysitter’s favorite show, Grey’s Anatomy, Dr. Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd was killed off after 11 seasons of increasingly goofy medical miracles. Patrick Dempsey, who had just signed a two-season contract extension last year, told EW that his death “just sort of evolved,” and “things happened very quickly,” which is another way of confirming the rumors that he and creator Shonda Rhimes were feuding on set.

The late Isaac Hayes also didn’t get along with his boss(es) when he left South Park in 2006. In a statement released at the time, “Chef” acknowledged that while “there is a place in this world for satire,” he believed Matt Stone and Trey Parker were preaching “intolerance and bigotry towards [the] religious beliefs of others.” In other words, Hayes was pissed that after years of mocking Christianity and Judaism and Islam and Mormonism and basically all religions, they made fun of his religion, Scientology, and that was too much for him to take. Stone confirmed as much:

“This has nothing to do with intolerance and bigotry and everything to do with the fact that Isaac Hayes is a Scientologist and that we recently featured Scientology in an episode of South Park,” Matt Stone said. “In 10 years and over 150 episodes of South Park, Isaac never had a problem with the show making fun of Christians, Muslims, Mormons, and Jews. He got a sudden case of religious sensitivity when it was his religion featured on the show. To bring the civil-rights struggle into this is just a non sequitur. Of course we will release Isaac from his contract and we wish him well.” (Via)

And by “wish him well,” they meant:

If you’re going to write off a character, that’s how you do it.
