The Award For The Top Comedy In The World For 2015 Went To… ‘How I Met Your Mother’?

Despite the tiny, trivial, borderline inconsequential fact — and really, I don’t even know why I’m bringing it up — that How I Met Your Mother technically aired its highly divisive season finale on May 31, 2014, more than 12 months ago, the series was the big winner at the 2015 Monte Carlo TV Festival, taking home the award for top comedy in the world. Yup, happened.

The hit CBS sitcom has won its first International Audience Award for best comedy at the Monte-Carlo TV Festival. Interestingly, the recognition, bestowed annually at the top-rated globally drama, comedy and soap, came well over a year after the ensemble comedy ended its run on CBS, the first time the award has gone to a series that is no longer on the air. US fare extended its dominance in the audience awards categories, with NCIS repeating as most popular drama series in the world for a second consecutive year.

Be honest: If you created a show that had been off the air for 13 months and you received a letter saying the “Monte Carlo TV Festival” wanted to award you a prestigious award, you’d be at least a little suspicious. Like, maybe it’s a trap. Like, you’d be in the crowd waiting to accept your award, and then POOF, all of a sudden, the lights go out, and when they come back up, you’d notice the priceless diamond-encrusted necklace Cobie Smulders had been loaned for the evening was gone, and the entire waitstaff was rushing out through the kitchen exit.

I’ve seen it a million times.
