Justifying Ray Velcoro’s Actions From The ‘True Detective’ Season Premiere

The season premiere of True Detective left a lot to take in. Most of it was a setup for the season ahead, as well as the events at Caspere’s home, but Colin Farrell’s Det. Ray Velcoro provided some crazy scenes in between getting to know characters. As ridiculous as some of those scenes were, they may have been more justified than initially realized. Let’s take a look.

Action: Velcoro beat up a writer who was reporting on the seedy side of Vinci.
Counterpoint: The underbelly has to eat, too. Plus, Velcoro and Frank go way back.

Action: Velcoro berated his son for not wearing the Nikes bought for him.
Counterpoint: Those sneakers are $150+, so he obviously needs to know what happened to them.

Action: Velcoro beat up the father of the kid who cut up his son’s Nikes.
Counterpoint: I mean, even an enraged Velcoro won’t beat up a kid. He has to beat up somebody, though, because… $150+ sneakers.

Action: Velcoro guzzled down some Blue Label like it was Lone Star.
Counterpoint: I got nothing here; this is the action of a depraved monster.
