In an interview with The Wrap, Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele dropped an unexpected bomb. They’re ending their enormously popular and critically acclaimed Comedy Central show, Key and Peele after the current season. After five years, the acerbic duo has decided to go out on top. Nothing personal, they say. It’s not us, it’s them:

“This is our final season – and it’s not because of Comedy Central, it’s us,” said Key. “It was just time for us to explore other things, together and apart. I compare it to Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor. We might make a movie and then do our own thing for three years and then come back and do another movie. I’m thinking we could do that every three years – take a year, go bang out a movie. That’s the plan right now.”

Key said he and Peele have been keeping quiet about the their show ending its run, “but Jordan and I were talking yesterday, and we decided it’s probably a good time to let people know.”

All of the sketch comedy’s episodes have already been filmed with the current season taking us into September. The duo previously worked on six seasons of MadTV, but Key & Peele helped them break into the mainstream. After bringing us classics like “East/West College Bowl” and maneuvering through racially-charged issues with ease, these guys simply want to move onto other territory. Perhaps a Police Academy reboot will be on the agenda, according to Key. Now there’s an interesting idea.
