There Was Going To Be A ‘Jurassic Park’ TV Show, Until Steven Spielberg Said No

Steven Spielberg is no stranger to cartoons. He’s credited as an executive producer on Tiny Toon Adventures, Family Dog, and Animaniacs, among others, yet there was never a Jurassic Park: The Animated Series, which seems like an obvious missed opportunity (the closest we got was this Critic parody). It wasn’t through lack of trying, though. Artist William Stout was contacted at peak butt-holding merchandising mania to design “a Jurassic Park animated series. This was not going to be a kiddy show… They wanted the show to be a mature prime time series with top writers and state-of-the-art television animation augmented with quite a bit of CG animation.”

Stout got the gig, then Spielberg said, “Nah.”

We made a trailer to communicate the look and feel of the series, also showing how we would combine computer animation with traditional animation.

All we needed was Spielberg’s approval.

I heard through the grapevine that he never bothered to watch what we had done. By that time the word was out that he was burnt out on Jurassic Park merchandising and all of the film’s commercial exploitation. So, it never got made. Too bad. (Via)

Yet, Spielberg was fine with slapping the War Horse logo on every backpack, bra, and bumper sticker in America. Hypocrite. Anyway, here’s what the show would have looked like.
