James Earl Jones Will Voice Mufasa In A New ‘Lion King’ Show

It’s been more than a year since we first told you about The Lion Guard, the Lion King spin-off series that centers on another one of Simba and Nala’s cubs, because everyone loved The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride so much. Never one to not take advantage of a bad situation (“LIONS ARE IN!”), Disney recently announced that Rob Lowe and Gabrielle Union have been added to the voice cast, as Simba and Nala, joining Max Charles (the annoying kid from The Strain), Modern Family‘s Sarah Hyland, Ernie Sabella as Pumbaa, and James Earl Jones, returning as Mufasa.

The Lion Guard centers on Kion as he assumes the role of leader of the Lion Guard, a team of animals in charge of preserving the Pride Lands. Instead of asking the fiercest and strongest lions to help him, Kion looks to his friends whom he believes have the most heroic qualities. This group includes Kion’s best friend Bunga, a fearless honey badger (Joshua Rush); Ono, an intellectual egret (The Middle‘s Atticus Shaffer); Fuli, a confident cheetah (Diamond White) and Beshte, a friendly and good-spirited hippo (Dusan Brown).

In case you’ve ever wondered what an “intellectual egret” looks like:

Kion may look cute now, but just wait until he gets older. He’ll publicly disavow working for Disney and start hitting up the strip clubs, sometimes as a spectator, other times as a performer. He’ll make a hit record and be invited to perform at the MTV Music Awards with Robin Thicke.

Who we’ll eat. All in all, not a bad career.
