With Game of Thrones‘ record-breaking Emmys haul, the cast and crew behind the show were in fairly high spirits following Sunday’s awards. Sure, the voting might’ve allowed them to walk away with the top awards on the night for a divisive season of television, but it could almost be considered a cumulative effort. But don’t think they got away from the night without talking about all that controversy the series stirred up this past season. Entertainment Weekly caught up with Dan Weiss and David Benioff at HBO’s post-Emmys party and talked about how they manage the offensive stuff that appears on the show:
“We never set out to offend anyone,” he said. “To try to offend anyone would be juvenile, but to be afraid to offend people would be cowardly. There were people saying they were never going to watch again. We’re just trying to tell the story the best we can. This means a lot, it’s a very nice feeling.”
Now, if you believe this, more power to you. It’s hard to think that there isn’t at least some thought tossed into the events of the series from both George R.R. Martin and the team behind the HBO series. Both have to be working on ways to grab the audience and “shock” them a bit.
Still, all controversy aside, it’s probably long overdue for the show to get the top nod at TV’s second biggest night (I place the CableACE Awards much higher). It’s not the best show, but it has a way about it and the folks deserved to celebrate:
“It’s such a surreal experience,” Benioff said. “Dan [Weiss] and I have been [working on the show] eight years now, back to that first meeting with George [R.R. Martin] at The Palm right by here on Santa Monica Blvd. To have George sitting right in front of us, to have it happen on his birthday, to break the record for most Emmys … the whole night’s been surreal and so much more than we expected or could have hoped for. It’s just really, really fun.”
And guess what? No mention of Jon Snow’s fate, the White Walkers, or any shocking deaths. It was indeed a splendid night for the folks from Game of Thrones.
