If you watched the Emmys ceremony this year, you already know HBO cleaned up, winning 43 awards (its biggest Emmy haul ever) for its variety of original shows and films. HBO NOW is a good place to binge-watch all of the nominees and winners (Veep!). It’s also a handy platform to check out some new original programming, as well as some debuting films.
The first thing you should probably do is watch A History of Violence a few dozen times, because it’s brilliant and it’s leaving the service come the end of the month. Follow that up with viewings of Brick, Magnolia, and Blood Diamond, but do so in moderation because they’re all pretty heavy, and the combined drama factor of those films might call for repeated viewing of Shrek just to offset the terrible throbbing in your tear ducts. Here’s the rest of the stuff you can check out on HBO Now this month.
Amy Schumer: Live at the Apollo (10/17)
Inside Amy Schumer took home an Emmy for Outstanding Variety Sketch Series, validating those who have called her the funniest woman on television today. Schumer plans on bringing more funny to the small screen with her first-ever HBO comedy special that will undoubtedly contain some references to her lady parts. Chris Rock directed this stand-up set, so we’re expecting some big things.
American Sniper (10/3)
Clint Eastwood directed this Oscar-nominated drama starring Bradley Cooper as real-life hero sniper Chris Kyle. The film is a deep look into the casualties of war, a term that extends beyond the body count. Cooper turns in one of the best performances of his career, and makes the case for being the best actor to appear in the audience on Inside the Actors Studio.
The Leftovers, Season 2 Premiere (10/4)
Mapleton is in the rearview mirror in Lost scribe Damon Lindelof’s drama following the lives of a handful of people coping with strange, global vanishings. The Garveys are hoping a Texas town will provide the asylum they seek — it has not been subject to any disappearances. It all sounds fine in theory, but in Lindelof’s world, misery strikes when you least expect it.
