Leonardo DiCaprio Will Bring Gangster Drama To Showtime With A 1980s Mafia Series

Leonardo DiCaprio is coming back to television, kinda. It’s been quite a while since the actor appeared as young Luke Brower on the hit ’80s sitcom Growing Pains and while there aren’t any details yet on whether the man will show up in front of the camera with his new project, THR is reporting DiCaprio is teaming up with Showtime and writer Brett Johnson (Mad MenRay Donovan) to bring an ’80s Mafia drama to the small-screen.

The last successful period drama of this ilk to hit premium cable was HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, which was executive produced by DiCaprio’s mentor, Martin Scorcese, and created by Terrence Winter, who both worked with DiCaprio on 2013’s The Wolf of Wall Street. It doesn’t look like either one of those men are attached to the new project as of yet, but this is Hollywood and stranger things have happened.

According to the report, the series will be set in 1980s Brooklyn and “traces a decade-long relationship between an unstable mafia captain and a rogue federal agent, each violating the strict codes of their respective organizations.” With Brett Johnson and a production team made up of folks from the Ray Donovan team, it looks like Showtime is planning to add another period drama — albeit a gritty sounding one —  to their roster as Masters of Sex wraps up its third season.
