David Spade Explains Why Steven Seagal Was The Worst ‘SNL’ Host Ever

Currently promoting his memoir, Not That Interesting, David Spade made an appearance on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live on Tuesday night alongside Matthew Broderick. As is the deal on WWHL, host Andy Cohen played “Plead the Fifth” with Spade, in which he asks the guest a number of questions and they can only opt out of answering one of them. Right out of the gate, Cohen pulled no punches, asking Spade which cast member he thought to be overrated during his time on Saturday Night Live.

But because David Spade is nothing if not a gentleman, he deflected the question and instead named the host who he thought was the most difficult to work with (which Cohen was apparently going to ask anyway), which would be Steven Seagal. Supposedly, Seagal didn’t so much grasp the whole comedy thing and was not the most cooperative to work with. So, now that Spade’s feud with Eddie Murphy has been put to rest, it looks like he’ll have to keep an eye over one shoulder because he just kinda insulted a 6-foot-4 martial arts expert … though Seagal should be used to it because SNL creator Lorne Michaels himself once bashed the Under Siege star on-screen in a 1992 episode of the show, and Seagal is oft-cited as a less than stellar host.

While in the hot seat, David Spade also told a pretty fascinating anecdote from his time on SNL, back when Jeff Daniels hosted in 1991. For some reason, they needed to make a plaster replica of Daniels’ head, which involved covering his entire head in plaster. Only, the plaster wouldn’t come off. Let’s just say that Jeff Daniels was one gag reflex between life and death. Terrifying.
