‘Make No Mistake, This Is War’: Watch The First Trailer For The New ‘Sherlock’ Special

It’s been more than 18 months since a new episode of Sherlock aired, but thankfully, finally, that wait is coming to an end. Kind of! As fans of the show are well aware, there’s a Christmas special coming out later this year that takes the BBC’s modern-day adaptation of the show and zips it back to the 19th century Victorian era. So far we’ve seen a teaser photo of Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman in era-appropriate garb as Sherlock and Watson, and a short scene from the special that debuted at Comic-Con, but now — now — there’s a real trailer.

The trailer, which was tweeted out from the official Sherlock account this afternoon, features lots of 19th century stuff and lines of dialogue like “Make no mistake, this is war!” and “Oh, Watson” and “Wear the damn hat!,” all of which are given a little context, and all of which would have also been great context-free, like the “Next week on Mad Men” teasers used to do. Also, there’s fog. So, so much fog.

We still don’t know exactly when this will premiere or why exactly they’re traveling through time, but if the entire reason for the latter turns out to be “To let Martin Freeman grow a luxurious 1800s mustache,” I really don’t see how anyone can argue with the decision. It’s a really great mustache.
