Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch received an award from the Queen of England earlier today. Have you ever read a more British thing than that? It’s got everything. Benedict Cumberbatch, the Queen… just those two things, I guess. But still, very British! I mean, what was the award for, ‘avin a row with his mates at the pub? Cheerin’ on the boys from Manchester when they take the pitch? Ridin’ the lorry up to his flat to eat bangers and ma-… wait, excuse me? It was for charity work? Because, in addition to a lifelong commitment to charity, he also raised more than £150,000 for Syrian refugees through personal post-show pleas for donations from audiences who went to see him play Hamlet at the Barbican Theater? And the name of the honor is “Commander of the Order of the British Empire,” which sounds super cool?

Oh man. I instantly regret those British jokes I was making.

“We all felt just powerless and, as a new father, to see the footage and the photos that came to us in the summer, I think every single one of us with a heart realised this wasn’t someone’s else’s problem somewhere else – this was all our problem, a humanitarian problem.

“So I was very happy to step up to the plate and ask a very receptive and very generous audience at the Barbican to help out.”

Benedict Cumberbatch: Good guy.
