David Spade Was Offered To Host ‘Late Night’ Before Conan O’Brien

Professional jackass David Spade has a memoir out. It’s called Almost Interesting, and in it, the Joe Dirt star writes about Chris Farley masturbating on his Playboy while they were at SNL together and Johnny Carson calling him over to the couch after a stand-up set, one of the highest honors a comedian could get, but Spade was too nervous to notice. Speaking of late night, and not masturbation, Spade also revealed in an interview with Esquire that he was offered to host Late Night after David Letterman left and before Conan O’Brien took the gig. This would have changed TV history considerably.

I got offered [Late Night with David] Letterman when he left NBC [in 1993]. How the f*ck I spaced that, didn’t put that in the book, I don’t know. But when I was going through the final version of the book, I thought, Oh sh*t, that happened. It occurred to me that it might have been interesting for people to know that I got offered Letterman and didn’t do it… From a guy who couldn’t even get on the show to then being offered it, you know what I mean? But then I got “Hollywood Minute” [on SNL] and things picked up. (Via)

Letterman left in 1993, two years before Spade starred in Tommy Boy. Had he accepted the job, the movie may never have been made. That would be a shame. Then again, in this alternate timeline, we can pretend Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star, Grown Ups, and Grown Ups 2 never happened, either.

Spade really should’ve hosted Late Night
