‘Daredevil’ Star Charlie Cox Didn’t Know His Character Is Supposed To Be Blind

Charlie Cox appears to be a promising Daredevil in all the clips we’ve seen so far, but he wasn’t always familiar with The Man Without Fear. He told Seth Meyers that he didn’t learn about the character until the day before he auditioned. He was aware of the existence of the Affleck movie — as we all are, unfortunately — but he didn’t know that movie was the same thing as the Marvel series.

The day before his audition, he received part of a script with a fake title and renamed characters, but his agent told him it was probably Daredevil and emailed a description of Matt Murdock: “redhead, tall, athletic, gymnastic, strong” and other similar adjectives. They left out a few important adjectives, like his superpowers and the whole “being blind” thing.

When Cox was hurriedly going over the lines with a friend, trying to memorize them in time, his friend pointed out something. Cox recounts the conversation:

“And he said, ‘I think — isn’t Daredevil blind?’ And I said — and I didn’t have time for this — and I was like, ‘No, dude, I’m pretty sure they would have told me if the guy was blind.'”

Just to be sure, Cox emailed his agent, who emailed back, “Oh, yeah, and he’s blind.” Cox refers to this as “a slight oversight” then apologizes for the pun.
