A Classic Chris Farley Reference Is Hidden In ‘Tom Clancy’s The Division’

Tom Clancy’s The Division has really connected with fans of cover-based shooters and MMOs. It combines the thrill and exploration of DayZ with the grindy-but-addicting gameplay of Destiny or Diablo. Considering the sources of inspiration, it’s no shock that The Division is packed full of Easter Eggs throughout its crumbling depiction of New York, and weeks after The Division’s release, millions of players are combing through the wasteland, finding new things to gawk over. The latest (and greatest) Easter Egg is a reference to the classic motivational speaker Matt Foley, played by Chris Farley at The Second City and on Saturday Night Live. You know, the guy who lived in a van down by the river.

Chris Farley had countless hilarious moments in his too-short career, so it’s nice to see his legacy live on, even if it’s a sly reference hidden deep within a video game. Since there’s clearly a Farley fan somewhere within Ubisoft, hopefully there are more references to the big guy. Maybe a Chippendales (there’s one in New York) or a moment where you need food in the game so a dialogue option is “lay off me I’m starving!” I’m just spitballing here. Either way – shoehorn those suckers in, Ubi.
