Dr. Phil Talking About Gay Athletes On 'Letterman' Is Where Gay Athlete Coverage Jumped The Shark

It’s pretty clear now that the Jason Collins media blitz has gone into full overdrive to the point where intelligent dialogue is being replaced by speculation, rambling and Karl Malone.

Well we got one more talking head joining the mix as Dr. Phil jumped in to talk about Collins and the psyche of the gay athlete. Goodness gracious, the interview seemed to last forever, with Phil not making too much sense.

Unfortunately, the entire slate of late night shows was pretty bland without too many newsworthy appearances. Still, we had a few cool moments. First, a quick video of Dr. Phil talking to Letterman about allergies. Yes, it was that kind of night.

— Jon Favreau was on Kimmel to remind us that Iron Man 3 comes out this week. Iron Man 3 comes out this week. Have we mentioned that yet?

— The most engaging guest of the nigh was Marc Maron, who talked to Fallon about his TV show and new book about his first marriage, his second marriage, porn and buying pants. I haven’t gotten to read it yet, but Attempting Normal sounds like a blast.

— For the second night in a row, I got to listen to Larry The Cable Guy talk. This has been a bad week. The latest victim was Craig Ferguson, who couldn’t make sense of why the hell people listen to Larry The Cable Guy. At least he followed up with an appearance from Abigail Spencer.

— Seriously, the night sort of dragged so here’s another picture of Abigail Spencer.

Can’t…look…away.
