Game of Thrones was an immediate ratings success for HBO, but Emilia Clarke didn’t feel the show was a hit until right before season two started.
That’s when The Simpsons parodied Thrones‘ opening sequence during the couch gag. “So me and my brother used to watch a lot of The Simpsons growing up,” Clarke told Ellen DeGeneres, “like that’s what we watched all the time. And I remember the day that he called me, I think it was like season two, and he called me and he was like, ‘Dude, get on YouTube like now because you are the Simpsons opening,’ and I was like, ‘Oh God, we made it, we did it. We did it.'” It’s like Kurt Cobain realizing Nirvana “made it” when Weird Al Yankovic parodied “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” except with Lard Lad killing Hans Moleman.
In that same interview with Ellen, Clarke, who recently discussed her breakup with Seth MacFarlane, also talked about being named the Sexiest Woman Alive and how she needed some liquid courage to pose for the cover naked:
“Doing those kind of sex scenes on camera is one thing, but doing it as yourself, I need alcohol to do. That’s what I needed. They just kept giving me vodka, and I would be like, ‘I’m just going to keep the duvet. I’m going to keep the sheet up.’ They’d be like, ‘3, 2, 1, go!’ and just yank it down. You’d be like, ‘Oh, no!'”
