Emilia Clarke Turned Down ‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ Over Nudity Concerns

It’s going to be a big couple of months for Emilia Clarke.

The fifth season of Game of Thrones premieres on April 12 — fingers crossed that this is the year Daenerys’ dragons FINALLY eat Ramsay — and in July, she’ll star as Sarah Connor in Terminator Genisys, probably disappointing the same NERDS who think she was miscast as Dany. The Hollywood Reporter recently spoke to Clarke about how she prepared for her Game of Thrones audition (“by studying George R.R. Martin’s novels and listening to Tupac Shakur…”) and why she turned down playing Anastasia Steele in Fifty Shades of Grey.

Last year, she was offered Edward Snowden’s girlfriend in Oliver Stone’s currently shooting Snowden but already had agreed to do an adaptation of JoJo Moyes’ best-selling tearjerker Me Before You, which starts production in April, and couldn’t make both projects work with her Thrones schedule. “My heart broke,” she says. She was less upset when she turned down Fifty Shades, although she was curious enough to take two meetings with director Sam Taylor-Johnson. “I’d done nudity before and was concerned with being labeled for doing it again,” she explains of why she said no. She’s been starkers on Game of Thrones many times, slipped into a bathtub naked in the Broadway production of Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and had sex with Zoidberg in a dumpster on Futurama. I can understand why she’s done with nudity for now.
