In a weird, retro Emmys 2016 opening, with timely references to O.J. Simpson in the white Bronco and Jimmy Kimmel and James Corden going full “Carpool Karaoke” to Wham!’s 1984 hit “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go,” there was a quick nod to an equally nostalgic show: Netflix’s super-hit Stranger Things, which will presumably be everywhere during next year’s ceremony.

Also in Kimmel’s pre-monologue: Julia Louis-Dreyfus making a solid “LBJ” joke (if you can’t swear on ABC, you might as well go with sexual innuendo), a bizarre appearance from Jeb Bush (“Are you nominated?” “Wow, what’s that like?”), the Modern Family cast getting into a car crash, and Kimmel hitching a ride with Daenerys Targaryen and her dragon to downtown Los Angeles.

Again, it was very weird.

But it could have been better: before the ceremony began, the kids from Stranger Things, including Millie Bobby Brown (Eleven), Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin), and Caleb McLaughlin (Lucas), entertained the crowd by singing “Uptown Funk,” or as they probably called it, the “Uptown-Down Funk” (Poor Steve/Jean-Ralphio must be stuck in Pawnee.)

No offense to Jimmy Kimmel, but no matter how you do tonight, you can’t compete with that. For more on the Emmys, check out Kimmel’s full monologue.
