‘Game Of Thrones’ Officially Has An End In Sight On HBO

In news that may disappoint the masses, HBO bosses announced Saturday it’s cash cow Game of Thrones will be concluding shortly. New HBO programming president Casey Bloys announced at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour that its biggest hit will end with season eight.

Bloys was asked right out of the gate what the future holds for Game of Thrones. Bloys did confirm that the yet-to-be announced eight season of the massively popular fantasy drama would be its last:

“Yes, I think [the showrunners, D.B. Weiss and David Benioff] have a very specific plan about the number of seasons they want to do. If I could get them to do more, I would take 10 seasons but we want to take their lead with what they could do and what the best version of the show is.”

Benioff and Weiss have been alluding that they were itching to wrap the show up sooner rather than later. For HBO’s part, it was a little apprehensive as the George R.R. Martin adaption has been one of it best success stories. The show was recently renewed for a seven episode, seventh season and the past sixth season was one of its most watched with an average of 25 million people tuning in for multiple plays, DVR and non-linear viewing.

The announcement for HBO is a little bittersweet as it has had trouble finding programming to fill the massive void, both critically and commercially, GOT had. But Bloys has not ruled out a spinoff of the program and how many episodes the proposed eigth season will be.
