Break out any spare “oh my!” exclamations you might have at the ready. The upcoming Star Trek small screen reboot has earned the blessing of the original Mr. Sulu.

Yes, George Takei is giving his stamp of approval to the planned digital revival of the iconic sci-fi series. In case you missed it, 2017 has been earmarked as the arrival date of a new Star Trek series that will premiere on CBS before new episodes debut on its digital and VOD outlet CBS All Access. Sadly, the series will not be a zany sitcom featuring Quark trying to have it all as a Ferengi bartender in Jacksonville.

Takei offered up praise for the new project while at the Sunday opening of his Broadway musical titled Allegiance. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, the 78-year-old TV legend declared “I think it’s great” when chatting about the series and shared that he thinks it fits in nicely with the climate of the ’10s.

Star Trek is about the future and innovative technology, and we’re living that right now. We are living in an amazing sci-fi world, so a digital Star Trek TV series is that future world.”

He noted that the series has had an impressive lifespan for a cancelled property.

“Well, we certainly have lived long for a failed television series. At the beginning of each episode, we announced that we were ‘boldly going on a five-year mission,’ but those Klingons in the programming department of NBC canceled us and ruined that five-year mission in three!

“Now, I do believe in the Vulcan greeting. We will live long and prosper.”

Takei also sat for an Reddit AMA on Monday to stress how much he’s looking forward to “what these imaginative futurists come up with.” The premiere of the series is slated for January 2017, and we look forward to George Takei’s review.
