December brings all kinds of goodies, be it in the form of gorgeous gifts, or perhaps just some snuggle time by the fireplace, drinking egg nog and enjoying some good TV. HBO NOW is your destination for the films, documentaries, and TV shows that will warm your core temperature up in the cold months. The Leftovers and Getting On are ending their current seasons, two films in the Divergent series will get you your fix of dystopia, and a trilogy of RoboCop movies will curb your cathartic cravings after you unwrap four ugly sweaters in succession. Here’s all the stuff you can expect from HBO NOW in December.
Get Hard (Original and Extended Cuts, 12/5)
In a story co-written my uber-comic scribe and director Adam McKay, Get Hard stars Will Ferrell as James King, a wealthy man heading to prison for 10 years for embezzlement. Kevin Hart plays Darnell, a man hired by King because he thinks he can prepare him for time in the slammer. There’s only one problem: Darnell has never been in prison. Get Hard was initially panned for its insensitive look at racial stereotypes, but if you can get past that, you’ll find a film that’s both fun and grounded in familial roots.
Vice Special Report: Countdown to Zero (12/1)
Premiering on December 1, Vice’s Countdown to Zero is an intense look into the search for the cure for HIV and AIDS. All December, HBO is following up this program with a bevy of shows and events aimed at AIDS awareness like Angels in America, The Normal Heart, And the Band Played On, and more. HBO’s “World AIDS Day Collection” is available at the beginning of December.
What We Do in the Shadows (12/11)
Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi are the writers, directors, and stars of this reverent and comedic homage to the vampire genre and mockumentary film. Clement, Waititi, and Jonny Brugh star as three vampires who are just trying to traverse the modern-day landscape without drawing too much attention to themselves while quenching their thirst for blood. The film boasts some nice special effects, and the bits of blood only add to the laughs, which are enough to fill up several coffins.
