What Makes Fans Go Crazy For ‘Rick and Morty’?

In just two short seasons, Rick And Morty has become one of the best comedies on TV right now. It tackles the hard topics, such as Pop-Tarts living in big toasters and driving around in smaller toasters. But how did such a ridiculous show, where they nearly wipe out civilization every episode (and sometimes do and just start over again) get so popular? Let’s take a look at how the series was created, and why it has gained such a strong following from its fans.

It all started with series creator Justin Roiland’s animated short, “The Real Adventures Of Doc And Mharti,” and as you could guess from the title, it was largely a parody of Back To The Future. What started as a giant middle finger to Universal became the basis for Rick And Morty, complete with Rick’s signature burp. After seeing the short, Community creator Dan Harmon worked with Roiland to adapt it for TV. Roiland, who fell in love with the characters while coming up with the short, continued to voice the two leads when the show premiered on Adult Swim.

Fans of Rick And Morty fell for the show because of its fast-paced dialogue that is often profound and has a largely “improvisational tone” thanks to Roiland and Harmon. The sci-fi alone makes the series worthwhile — as Business Insider put it: “The most wildly inventive and mind-blowing science fiction ideas on television.” The show can do pretty much whatever it wants as any dimension, disease, or cataclismic explosion is just an invention away. You could pick pretty much any out-of-context clip and fall in love with Rick And Morty, but I’m gonna go with this one. So go, get schwifty, and watch both seasons already, and just be thankful it has been renewed for season three.
