James Spader Will Leave 'The Office' at Season's End

According to Variety, James Spader, who plays Dunder Mifflin/Sabre CEO Robert California, will not return for another season of “The Office.” Oh! Does this mean he’ll FINALLY make sex, lies, and blu-ray???

“James always wanted this to be a one-year arc, and he now leaves us having created one of the most enigmatic and dynamic characters in television,” said “Office” executive producer Paul Lieberstein. “He’s been a great friend to me and the show, helping us successfully transition into the post-Michael Scott years, and I’m grateful for that.” (Variety)

Robert California’s monologues were grand and he summed up the Black Eyed Peas (“It’s rock ‘n’ roll for people who don’t like rock ‘n’ roll. It’s rap for people who don’t like rap. It’s pop for people who don’t like pop”) better than anyone ever. But he also personified season eight of “The Office”: occasionally funny, sure, but not in a way that benefits character consistency or plot cohesion. He was a cartoon character on an increasingly cartoon-ish show, who never developed a good chemistry with Andy Bernard (a total disappointment). I’m not sure if I’ll miss him because that would imply caring enough about the NINTH SEASON of “The Office” to have an opinion.
