Ariana Grande and Jimmy Fallon have a fine relationship. One that you could even describe as cordial. They may not always have the most substance to their backstage talks, but when you’re hosting the Tonight Show, you’re a busy guy. You can’t expect Jimmy Fallon and the mega-popular Ariana Grande to have intense and deep discussions when they’re preparing for a show. And it’s even more difficult for them to have a meaningful conversation when they’re conversing via lip syncing songs.
In a segment that’s kinda like a dad-joke gone wrong, Jimmy Fallon and Ariana Grande are (almost) able to pull off a whole two-and-a-half minute conversation using snippets of popular hits of yesteryear and today. It’s a pretty nonsensical segment that is confusing if you think about it too hard, so its best not to, because Fallon and Grande pretty much start making fun of the whole sketch midway through, all while keeping lip sync kayfabe. That’s when the segment really works, and pop reference after pop reference flows like we’re chasin’ waterfalls, and we’re no longer sticking to the rivers and the lakes that we’re used to. You know, like a typical late night segment. This is bad. But, you know… in a good way.
