Actor John C. Reilly had some very sad news for everyone on Wednesday’s episode of The Late Late Show with James Corden. Despite the fact that he and Dr. Steve Brule — his character on the fantastic Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! spin-off, Check It Out! with Dr. Steve Brule — are the same person, they actually aren’t. Or at least that was the gimmick behind Reilly’s promotional gag for the program’s upcoming fourth season on Adult Swim. Even Central Intelligence‘s “straight man,” Kevin Hart couldn’t believe what he was hearing Reilly say while they sat together on Corden’s couch.
“It’s, I think, the funniest thing I’ve ever been involved in,” Reilly told Corden after showing a clip to the audience. “I’m an executive producer on the show. It’s made by Dr. Steve Brule and his friend Denny. They provide us the videotapes, and then we get them out into the world. I come on shows like this to tell people about it.”
The Late Late Show host and his other guest did their best to appease Reilly’s bit, asking “are you trying to say that you’re not Dr. Steve Brule?”
“No, he’s a doctor. I’m just an actor,” Reilly explained. “You’ll see! When the credits come up, I’m an executive producer on the show.”
