Jon Berenthal Argues That Fans Of ‘Daredevil’ Haven’t Met The Real Punisher Just Yet

The second season of Netflix and Marvel’s Daredevil may have had a large, gaping, Wilson Fisk-sized hole in it, but the additions of Elektra and The Punisher were enough to keep fans happy for the time being. Jon Berenthal’s Punisher, in particular, really seemed to hit that sweet spot for long time fans, with many lauding his performance in the role and for doing a fan favorite character justice.

Jon Berenthal doesn’t seem to agree with a lot of this praise, though, according to Comic Book Resources. It’s not that he doesn’t love the praise, it’s more of a semantics thing, really. You see, Jon Berenthal doesn’t see the Frank Castle that was shown in Daredevil season two as The Punisher. That’s just a pissed off, grieving Frank Castle.

“Beating someone up to drag them into jail is different than someone who is exercising his rage on people,” Bernthal said. “The Frank Castle you find in this story is not The Punisher. He’s reeling from the loss of his family. He’s driven by rage and is on a singular mission to find these people who took his family from him, and do it as brutally as possible.”

If anything, the Frank Castle that was shown in Daredevil was just the origin story, the whole Punisher thing comes later. It should be noted that he doesn’t really embrace The Punisher logo and iconography until the very end of the season, meaning the stuff that will happen in the future will indeed be The Punisher. For now, though? That was just Frank Castle.
