In a somewhat puzzling decision, Katy Perry will host the December 10th episode of “Saturday Night Live” with musical guest Robyn. So, the good news is that we won’t have to hear Katy Perry’s music. The bad news is that huge tits are all you need to give you a role that goes to too few accomplished comedic actresses.
Perry is not a complete stranger to acting. She appeared in an episode of How I Met Your Mother earlier in the year and lent her voice to Smurfette this summer’s feature adaptation of The Smurfs. [THR]
She’s also married to British funnyman Russell Brand, who hosted the show back in February and is very likely to turn up in this episode. [Rolling Stone]
This is hard for me. Studies have shown that no other human being likes chicks with pink hair and big boobs more than I do, and in that regard Katy Perry can do no wrong — even on the miserable days when “Firework” is stuck in my head. However, as a proponent of merit-based systems, I don’t think “guest role on a sitcom, The Smurfs, and married to a comedian” is the kind of resumé that warrants an “SNL” hosting gig. And considering how hard it is for women to work their way up in the male-dominated world of comedy, giving an honor like this to a pretty girl with a big rack and no credentials is not exactly a step forward in feminism.
On the other hand, maybe I’m undervaluing Perry’s acting chops. Let’s keep in mind her last “SNL” appearance:
Can I watch 90 minutes of this? Yeah, probably. But I’ll hate myself for it.
