Matt Damon Finally Addressed His Awkward Meeting With Prince

Earlier this year, in an interview with GQ, we found out that Matt Damon met Prince once, and that the conversation was, well, super-awkward. You can hardly blame him for being bad at making small talk with Prince; would any of us really have known what to say to the late icon? Well, last night, Damon appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where he finally talked about the now famous encounter.

Apparently, Damon and his wife took their daughter to a Prince concert sometime around 2008, and they met him after the show. The Jason Bourne star asked Prince if he still lived in Minnesota, and as the story goes, he responded “I live inside my own heart, Matt Damon.” What makes this story so perfect is that he literally called him “Matt Damon.” If he just calls him Matt, it’s still an amusing response, but somehow, actually calling him by his full name is what puts it over the top.

Of course, it’s possible that the reason for Prince’s ridiculous response is that it’s well established that Prince lived in Minnesota — he lived in his Paisley Park compound until his death. Still, it’s hard to really fault Damon for not knowing what to say here. Really, the story just reminds us what a larger-than-life figure Prince was; anyone, even an A-list movie star would naturally be intimidated by him.

Later in the episode, Damon joined Fallon for a game of Box Of Lies.
