After a long, controversial search to find an African-American female comedian who lives up to Kenan Thompson’s high standards (“She’s funny, but is she Good Burger funny?), SNL has hired Sasheer Zamata.
Zamata, who trained at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York, becomes the first black female Saturday Night Live cast member in five years since the departure of Maya Rudolph…Zamata, whose name had been floated as a suitable SNL candidate before, was among 12 who received callbacks and were invited to test on the SNL stage on December 16. She’ll make her debut during next weekend’s episode, hosted by Drake. Now SNL has to hire a female midget, a black Jew, a transvestite Canadian, and a blind vampire, and THEN they’ll have all their diversity bases covered.
