No. Not the one from Office Space. The real Michael Bolton. The terrible (Grammy-winning) pop singer who a new generation of young people now only know from his Saturday Night Live Digital Short: Captain Jack Sparrow. The damn sitcom even has Bolton’s name in the title: Michael Bolton’s Daughter Is Destroying My Life.
The show comes from the mind of Alison Miller, who plays Matthew Perry’s super-cute assistant on Go On. It is loosely based on her own real-life celebrity encounters, according to Deadline.
Before the project came together, she had not met Bolton, who will play a fictional version of himself. Tami Sagher (30 Rock) will write Michael Bolton’s Daughter Is Destroying My Life, which tells the story of a naïve young writer who moves to the big city and ends up taking a job heading “social media” for singer-songwriter Michael Bolton. The writer quickly learns she has her hands full with Bolton and the wild-child daughter he has recently taken in.
If James Van Der Beek can revise his career by playing a fictional (yeah, right) version of himself on Don’t Trust the B in Apt. 23, there’s no reason Michael Bolton can’t also pull it off, as long as he’s able to maintain a sense of humor about himself. Maybe he can have his friend, Kenny G, over, and they can “shred.” I just hope this doesn’t start a huge new trend where everyone from the 90s returns as themselves in new sitcoms. No one wants to see NBC’s new show, Kevin Sorbo: Living Off Government Cheese.
